Epidemiological investigation on malocclusion deformity and orthodontic treatment awareness among children in Shijiazhuang

Abstract  Objective To understand the prevalence and composition ratio of malocclusion deformity in preschool children in Shijiazhuang, and to investigate the causes of malocclusion deformity and their awareness of orthodontic treatment. Methods A total of 2144 children with deciduous dentition aged three to six years old from ten kindergartens in eight districts of Shijiazhuang City from January to June 2021 were selected as clinical research samples by the principle of stratified random sampling. The development of deciduous teeth malocclusion deformity, understand the prevalence of malocclusion deformity and the ratio of various components were checked. At the same time, the cause of malocclusion deformity and the awareness of orthodontic treatment were understood in the form of self-made questionnaires. Results There was no statistical difference in the different genders of prevalence of deciduous dentition deformity among preschool children in Shijiazhuang (P > 0.05); in different genders of malocclusion deformities, there was no statistical difference between different type (P > 0.05); among the causes affecting the formation of deciduous dentition deformity, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of children of different genders (P > 0.05). The proportion of male children with orthodontic awareness was lower than that of female children, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05); there was no significant difference in the proportion of children of different genders receiving orthodontic treatment (P > 0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of deciduous malocclusion deformity in preschool children in Shijiazhuang is high, and the awareness of orthodontic treatment is insufficient. Early attention should be given and oral health education should be strengthened, effective use of oral public health policies for targeted prevention, and good oral health care for deciduous dentition.
