Survey on cognition of direct-to-consumer genetic testing among junior medical students in our school |

Abstract Objective To investigate the cognition of direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTC) among college students in Zhaoqing Medical College (“our school” for short). Methods From September 2018 to June 2020, taking students of different grades in our school were taken as the research objects, the stratified random sampling survey method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey on the content of DTC genetic testing. Results In this survey, 2507 questionnaires were distributed, 1696 valid questionnaires were recovered, and the effective recovery rate was 67.65%. The medical students surveyed had a certain understanding of DTC genetic testing, and they had a high degree of confidence in it. More than 93% of students agreed that there was a relationship between genes and health. However, it could be seen from the specific cases and details that they did not have a deep understanding of this aspect. 63.33% of medical students accepted DTC genetic testing. There were no significant differences in the degree of confidence in DTC gene products among students of different genders, origins, grades, and majors (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in the acceptance of DTC gene products among students of different genders and origins (P > 0.05); there were statistically significant differences in the acceptance of DTC gene products among students of different grades and majors (P < 0.05). Conclusion Although the medical students who were surveyed have some knowledge of DTC genetic testing, the understanding and acceptance of it is still at a superficial stage. Knowledge composition and knowledge level affect medical students’ acceptance of DTC genetic testing. Medical students should actively understand the cutting-edge technologies and products of modern medicine and enrich their medical knowledge.
