Abstract Objective To explore the mediating effect of coping style in the influence of needs on subjective well-being in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and to provide evidence for improving their subjective well-being. Methods From August to December 2020, a total of 300 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after breast cancer surgery were selected by convenience sampling method in Wuhan University People’s Hospital, Wuhan University Zhongnan Hospital, and Hubei Cancer Hospital. Taking stress theory as the theoretical framework, a questionnaire survey was conducted using the need assessment scale for female breast cancer patients, the medical coping style questionnaire, and the overall well-being scale. Results A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed in this survey, 300 questionnaires were recovered, and 282 were actually valid, with an effective recovery rate of 94%. The needs of patients after breast cancer surgery were negatively correlated with facing and subjective well-being, and positively correlated with avoidance and yielding; facing was negatively correlated with avoidance and yielding, and positively correlated with subjective well-being; avoidance was positively correlated with yielding, and negatively correlated with subjective well-being; Yield was negatively correlated with subjective well-being (P < 0.05). Facing coping and yielding coping played a partial mediating effect between the needs and subjective well-being of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after surgery (95%CI: -6.443 to -0.760, -4.251 to -0.837). Conclusion Needs can directly affect the subjective well-being of patients undergoing chemotherapy after breast cancer surgery, and can also indirectly affect their subjective well-being through confrontation and surrender.
