Investigation on lifestyle and awareness status of diabetes among primary and secondary school students in Shanghai suburb |

Abstract Objective To investigate the diabetic cognitive situation, lifestyle in Shanghai suburb elementary and middle school students and analysis the related influence factors. Methods From October to November 2015, 174 suburban preparatory classes students and 88 fifth grade students in the same area middle school were selected to carry out the questionnaire survey, the cognition of diabetes, bad lifestyle and its influence factors were investigated and statistically analyzed. Results The overall awareness rate of diabetes and diabetes prevention in primary and secondary school students were 84.4% and 50.4%. The percent of students who had poor lifestyle was 88.2%, the percent of overweight and obesity was 25.6%. Among them 77.27% pupils like drinking beverage and 73.61% secondary school students like eating fired food. Single factor Logistic regression analysis showed that the family history of diabetes was the influencing factor of awareness rate of diabetes and diabetes prevention and participation in preventive action among primary and secondary school students in Shanghai suburb, and age was the influencing factor of awareness of diabetes, and the awareness rate of diabetes prevention was the influential factor in the prevention of diabetes action (P < 0.05). Conclusion The proportion of primary and secondary school students poor lifestyle with in Shanghai suburb is much higher and most of them lack of the awareness of obesity and diabetes. It is necessary to carry out diabetes health education among them and develop the ability of diabetes intervention.
