Abstract Objective To explore the research status, hotspots, and development direction of health education from the perspective of general practitioners, and to provide a basis for further scientific research. Methods With “health education”, “health management”, and “general practitioner” as the key words, the retrieval strategies were developed according to the characteristics of China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, VIP and China Biomedical Meducine disc, and relevant literatures from the establishment of the database to August 2021 were retrieved. CiteSpace software was used for visual analysis. Results A total of 1333 references were included. 2018 was the year with the most number of published papers, 123 articles were published; the core research team was concentrated in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai; the research hotspot had experienced four shifts since 1993. The core hotspots were “diabetes”, “hypertension”, and “community health service”, and the current hotspot was “hierarchical diagnosis and treatment”. Conclusion There is still development room for current research, and that the number of published papers has fluctuated in recent ycars, but it is insufficient; although stable research teams have been formed, there is a lack of collaboration; the regional development of related research is unbalanced; the trends of hot research topics are consistent with policy orientation. It is recommended that subsequent studies revolve around the needs of residents before health education from the perspective of general practitioners.
