Abstract  Chloasma belongs to the category of “brownish black macula” in Chinese medicine. Guided by the theory of collaterals disease, the etiology and pathogenesis of chloasma in Chinese medicine can be summarized as the first occurrence of the stagnation of liver qi and disharmony of qi and collaterals, root of the emptiness of zang-fu viscera and collaterals disease, and manifestation of the stagnant blockade of collaterals disease. Combined with the correlation between pathological mechanism of Western medicine and collateral disease theory, it can be summarized as vascular factor inflammatory response (collateral heat), blood circulation disorder (collateral stasis), oxidative stress response (collateral poison). Under the guidance of collateral disease theory and combined with the pathological and pharmacological mechanism of Western medicine, this paper discusses the therapeutic significance of regulating qi, tonifying deficiency, and dispelling stasis in the treatment of chloasma.
