Abstract Objective To understand the current situation of death anxiety among nursing students in higher vocational colleges, and to analyze the predictive value of the Chinese college students mental health scale (CCSMHS). Methods A total of 1553 nursing students of Quanzhou Medical College were sampled by convenience from March to June 2020, and a cross-sectional survey was conducted using CCSMHS and death anxiety scale. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to evaluate the value of mental health status in predicting death anxiety of higher vocational nursing students. Results The score of death anxiety of higher vocational nursing students was (43.72±14.40) points. There were statistically significant differences in death anxiety among higher vocational nursing students of different genders, only-child or not (P < 0.05). Logistic regression results showed that employment pressure, sensitivity, hallucinations, and delusions were the risk factors for high death anxiety in higher vocational nursing students (OR > 1, P < 0.05), while suicidal intent and self-injury behavior were protective factors for high death anxiety (OR < 1, P < 0.05). Employment stress, sensitivity, hallucinations and delusions had predictive value for high death anxiety, and the area under the ROC curve of employment stress was the largest, which was 0.615. Conclusion Higher vocational nursing students are more serious in high death anxiety. Students with high scores on employment pressure, sensitivity, and hallucinations and delusions are more likely to have high death anxiety. At the same time, focus on the evaluation of death anxiety by students with high scores on suicide intention and self-injury behavior.
