Observation of abnormal changes of brain structure in patients with alcohol dependence based on MRI#br# |

Abstract Objective To observe the abnormal changes of brain structure in patients with alcohol dependence based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods A total of 150 patients with alcohol dependence admitted to Shaoxing Seventh People’s Hospital, Zhejiang Province (hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”) from June 2019 to December 2020 were selected as the research subjects and included in the research group. Another 150 healthy people who underwent routine physical examination in our hospital at the same period were selected as the control group. MRI examination was performed in both groups, and the ventricular temporal horn width, hippocampal volume, nucleus accumbens volume, and the occurrence of brain mass lesions (brain atrophy, white matter demyelinating spot, cerebral softening focus, and corpus callosum degeneration) were compared. Results The ventricular temporal horn width and the hippocampal volume in both sides in the research group were larger than those in the control group, and the nucleus accumbens volume on both sides were smaller than those in the control group, the incidence of brain mass lesions was higher than that in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion MRI examination is helpful to observe the abnormal changes of brain structure in patients with alcohol dependence, among which the width of temporal horn of ventricle, hippocampus volume, nucleus accumbens volume, and brain mass lesions are sensitive indicators.
