Abstract  Objective To understand the impact of demographic variables on doctors’ organizational support and professional commitment in tertiary hospitals across China, and to provide suggestions for improving doctors’ professional commitment. Methods A total of 2500 clinicians from tertiary hospitals at a conference in 2017 were selected as the research objects, demographic data, professional commitment, and sense of organizational support were collected, and their correlations were analyzed. Results In this study, 1974 questionnaires were recovered, and 1800 were valid questionnaires, with an effective recovery rate of 91.23%. There were highly statistically significant differences in organizational support and career commitment among different regions, professional titles, working years, and age groups (P < 0.01). There was a highly statistically significant difference in the sense of organizational support among doctors in different departments (P < 0.01). There was a positive correlation between organizational support and career commitment (r = 0.54, P < 0.01). The sense of organizational support was positively correlated with professional title, educational background and years of experience (r = 0.11, 0.06, 0.12, P < 0.01), but was negatively correlated with region (r = -0.08, P < 0.05). In addition, career commitment was positively correlated with age, professional title, and working years (r = 0.16, 0.15, 0.17, P < 0.01). Conclusion Managers should attach importance to doctors’ sense of organizational support and professional commitment, increase policy support, improve the corresponding management system, and then enhance doctors’ professional commitment.
