| Comparative study on authorial stance markers in English abstracts of Chinese and international medical journals#br# |

Abstract Objective To analyze the features of use and academic discourse function of authorial stance markers in Chinese and international medical journals. Methods Chinese and foreign medical journals with high impact factors were randomly selected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Science Citation Index databases, English abstracts of papers published in 2018-2019 were extracted. Corpus of English abstracts of domestic medical journals and international medical journals were established. AntConc 3.5.8 software was used to retrieve the occurrence frequency of stance markers in these two corpora, and the differences in the use of stance markers in the two corpora were compared and analyzed. Results The frequencies of the use of hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self-referencing in international journals were higher than those in domestic journals (P ＜ 0.05); the frequencies of verb, adverb, and adjective hedges in international journals were higher than those in domestic journals (P ＜ 0.05) ; the frequency of noun boosters in international journals was higher than that in domestic journals (P ＜ 0.05); the frequencies of attitude verb, adjective attitude markers in international journals were higher than those in domestic journals (P ＜ 0.05), and the frequencies of self-referencing "we" "our" were higher than those in domestic journals (P ＜ 0.05). The diction of authorial stance markers in international journals was relatively diversified, while that in domestic journals was relatively monotonous. Conclusion Chinese medical researchers could use appropriate stance markers to construct their academic stance and identity, enhance the discourse interaction with readers, so as to build up academic power and deliver the voice of the Chinese medical community to the world.
