Abstract Objective To explore the current research status, hotspots, and frontiers in the field of quality of death, and to provide direction for future research. Methods The retrieval time was from the database contruction to September 2020, and the data source was the Web of Science core collection. The annual number of documents was analysised by Excel 2019. CiteSpace 5.7 R2 software was used to draw national and institutional cooperation networks to explore the distribution of major research forces in this field. In order to reflect the research evolution process and hotspots information of this field, the time chart of keywords, surge keywords and highly cited literatures were comprehensively applied. Results A total of 290 papers in the field of quality of death were concluded. Four countries included United States, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Belgium and their institutions were the leading forces of scientific research. Research hotspots in the field of quality of death were “quality of care” “end of life discussion” “awareness of terminal illness” “measurement tools” “comfortable care for patients with advanced dementia”, and “urgent referrals”. The leading edge topics in the future research of quality of dying were “survival” and “people”. Conclusion The research in quality of death is certainly increasing and the tremendous potential growing. In the future, researchers can explore the operation model of hospice care institutions suitable for China combining with local characteristics and promote sustainable development of hospice care.
