Abstract Objective To investigate the characteristics of multiple infection of human papillomavirus (HPV) and its relationship with cervical lesions, which can provide references for the screening, treatment and vaccine development of cervical diseases. Methods The clinical data of 1175 patients with cervical pathology in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from January 2014 to January 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the different pathological diagnosis, they were divided into cervicitis group (107 cases), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)Ⅰ group (364 cases), CIN Ⅱ-Ⅲ group (447 cases) and cervical cancer group (257 cases). The number of multiple infection of HPV cases, age distribution characteristics, infection type, and characteristics form of patients with different pathological types were compared. Results There were 291 cases of multiple infection of HPV, and the multiple infection rate was 24.77%. There were statistical differences in the incidence of multiple infection among different pathological types (P < 0.05). CIN Ⅰ was the predominant type of multiple infection of HPV in people under 30 years old, and CIN Ⅱ-Ⅲ was the predominant multiple infection of HPV in people after 30 years old. The highest HPV type detection rate of the first three kinds of subtypes were high-risk, respectively, HPV16, 52 and 58. Different cervical lesions were dominated by high-risk HPV mixed with other types of infection, and the proportion of double infection was the highest. Conclusion Multiple infection of HPV are found to be associated with the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, the prevention and treatment should be focused on patients under 30 years of age and patients with multiple HPV infections of HPV16, 52 and 58.
