A new mode for the transition of college English teachers from EGP to ESP in medical universities |

Abstract Against the backdrop of increasing difficulties in college English teaching and of the “Double First-Class” university project in China, it is inevitable to shift from English for general purposes (EGP)-oriented teaching to English for specific purposes (ESP)-oriented teaching. Faced with various pain spots, the college English teachers in medical universities must adapt themselves to the shift. Through an analysis of their role and knowledge and based on an ESP program in a medical university, a new transition mode for college English teachers to be ESP-ready is proposed. Featuring “mutually beneficial cooperation”, the mode is carried out in cooperation between EGP teachers and medical teachers, and benefits both of them. Of high feasibility, the“mutually beneficial cooperation mode” can effectively assist with college English teachers′ transition from EGP to ESP.
