| Stellate ganglion block guided by ultrasound used on breakthrough pain of herpes zoster in the head and neck: a case report |

Abstract Stellate ganglion block is usually applied in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia around the head and neck. In this case, a 64-year-old woman was adimitted to hospital for the pain in the left earlobe and occiput for 4 d, erythema and herpes in left neck for 1 d. The herpes zoster was located on the left neck and shoulder, but in the left earlobe and occipital area, the herpes disappeared and were mainly painful. The pain was paroxysmal, and the score of visual analogue scale during breakthrough was 10 and the intermittent period was 4. The therapy was combined with anti-virus, neuro nutrition and analgesia. After one performace of stellate ganglion block guided by ultrasound, the patient derived excellent relief from pain. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the experiences of this kind of disease and give a guidance for diagnose and treatment in pain clinic.
