Abstract Objective To compare the content of total saponins in commercially available Paris polyphylla from Wudang Mountain Area to investigate the quality of herbal pieces purchased from hospitals, pharmacies and other pharmaceutical markets. It provides a reference for production, distribution, clinical application and regulation of Paris polyphylla. Methods Herbal pieces of the Paris polyphylla were collected from hospitals and pharmacies in Wudang Mountain Area (mainly in Shiyan, Hubei Province). The content of total saponins in Paris polyphylla was determined by an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer at 406 nm with perchloric acid as chromogenic reagent. Results The content of saponins in Paris polyphylla from 23 samples had obvious differences, the minimum was 1.79%, and the maximum was up to 11.79%. Conclusion The quality of Paris polyphylla is unstable which can affect the safety and efficacy of clinical application. The supervision of the production and marketing of Paris polyphylla need to be strengthened. Only by promoting the standardized planting of Chinese medicine materials, the stable quality of Paris polyphylla can be ensured.
