Abstract Objective To investigate the serum content of total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) in patients with minor recurrent aphthous ulcer (MiRAU) and compare them versus healthy individuals, and then to analyze that whether there is a possible relationship between TOS/TAS and the pathogenesis of RAU. Methods Ninety-seven patients having been diagnosed with minor recurrent aphthous ulcer (MiRAU) who presented in the Department of Stomatology of Bethune International Peace Hospital ("our hospital" for short) from March 2015 to December 2016 and 102 healthy persons being taken normal medical examination in our hospital were selected as observation group and control group respectively. The serum content of TOS, TAS, malondialdehyde (MDA) and uric acid (UA) were measured by the colorimetric measurement method, and then the oxidative stress index (OSI) being calculated were compared. Results The serum content of TOS and MDA and the value of OSI in the observation group were all higher than those in the control group, while the serum content of TAS was lower than that of the control group, with statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in the serum content of the UA (P > 0.05). Conclusion The oxidative stress status seems to have certain correlation with the pathogenesis of recurrent aphthous ulcer.
