Expression of ANO1 and its correlation with the prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma |

Abstract Objective To investigate the expression of ANO1 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and to determine the prognostic value of ANO1 for HNSCC patients. Methods The differences of ANO1 mRNA expressions in HNSCC and normal mucosa tissues were analyzed based on Oncomine database. The specimens of patients undergoing surgery with laryngeal cancer in Fudan University Pudong Medical Center from February to October 2017 were collected. ANO1 mRNA expressions in laryngeal cancer (26 cases) and normal mucosa tissues (26 cases) were determined using RT-PCR. The relationship between ANO1 mRNA expression and prognosis of HNSCC patients was analyzed using Oncomine and cBioPortal database. Results The mRNA expression of ANO1 was significantly higher in multipe HNSCC tissues than normal mucosa tissues (P < 0.05). Using Rickman statistics, there was no significant difference in 5-year overall survival (OS) between ANO1 mRNA high expression and low expression patients (P ﹥ 0.05). However, there were significant differences in OS and disease/progression-free survival (DFS/PFS) between ANO1 mRNA high expression and low expression patients through searching cBioPortal database (TCGA, Provisional) (P < 0.05). Conclusion The expression of ANO1 is elevated in HNSCC tissues. Patients with high expression of ANO1 had lower survival than those with low expression.
