Abstract  Objective To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture on primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods A total of 40 cases (69 eyes) of POAG patients were selected from the Department of Ophthalmology and Acupuncture, Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to May 2020. According to the random number table method, they were divided into control group (20 cases, 34 eyes) and acupuncture group (20 cases, 35 eyes). The control group was treated with Prostaglandin Eye Drops and Micoraphenol routine treatment. Acupuncture group was combined with acupuncture treatment on the basis of Prostaglandin Eye Drops and Micoraphenol routine treatment. Bilateral hégǔ (LI4), jīngmíng (BL1) and qiúhòu (EX-HN07) of patients were collected. Acupuncture was performed three times a week for 12 consecutive times as a course of treatment. The improvement of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, visual field and quality of life in the two groups before and after treatment were observed. Results Before treatment, there were no significant differences in intraocular pressure and visual acuity between the two groups (P > 0.05). After treatment, intraocular pressure in both groups was decreased compared with before treatment, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in intraocular pressure between the two groups (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in visual acuity and visual field between the two groups before and after treatment (P > 0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in glaucoma quality of life (GQL-15) scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). After treatment, GQL-15 scores in both groups were lower than before treatment, and the acupuncture group was lower than the control group, the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). The total effective rate of acupuncture group was higher than that of acupuncture group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture at specific acupoints can effectively improve POAG induced intraocular pressure and patients’ self-symptoms in the life scale, but the improvement of visual acuity and visual field is not obvious, there is a trend of improvement, which may be related to the treatment course and the sample size.
