Abstract：“Nourishing yang in spring and summer, nourishing yin in autumn and winter” is an important health maintenance rule of traditional Chinese medicine. Since Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor was written, there have been many representative theories. In modern times, due to the multi-dimensional and multi-angle development, its theories are complicated, so it is inevitable to misunderstand and misread, the disadvantages of misuse are also present. Starting from the original meaning, this paper explores the connotation of “nourishing” “yin and yang”, and finds out that “nourishing” contains the meaning of “follow to nourish”, that is following the change of the four nature of drugs, the nature of yin and yang to nourish. “Yin and yang” refers to the root, and also refers to “the response of the four nature of drugs”, which contains the way of “following the principle of obedience and adversity” and “preventive treatment of disease”. It is helpful to understand, explain and apply correctly by distinguishing “normal person” nourishment and “morbid” maintenance.
