Mental health status of the elderly in China and intervention suggestions

Abstract:This paper reviews and summarizes the literature on mental health of the elderly in China since 2014, it is concluded that there are some differences in mental health influencing factors and manifestations of urban elderly, rural elderly, retired elderly and empty-nesters in China, the mental health problems of the elderly in rural areas are more serious than those in urban areas, chronic diseases, low educational attainment and poverty are major factors. The psychological problems of retired old people appear in the form of “retired syndrome”, the mental health status of the military retired elderly and the university retired elderly subgroup is also different. The main psychological problems of empty nesters are “empty nest syndrome” caused by economic status and family factors. This paper puts forward some suggestions on mental health intervention policies for the elderly, such as carrying out mental health education, strengthening community activities, comprehensively improving social support ability, and establishing community follow-up management and referral mechanism.
