Abstract:Objective To explore the changes of nasal physiological function and its clinical significance before and after nasal septum perforation(NSP) surgery. Methods From January 2014 to December 2016, 60 cases of NSP patients received surgery treatment in the Third People's Hospital of Changzhou City were selected and divided into the small perforation group (<1 cm, 18 cases), the medium perforation group (1-2 cm, 26 cases) and the large perforation group (>2 cm, 16 cases) according to the results of nasal endoscopic examination. The visual analogue scoring system (VAS) was uesd to evaluate the clinical symptoms among the three groups. The nasal resistance, nasal mucus mucociliary system clearance function and olfactory function before and after surgery were detected and compared. The Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the related factors of VAS. Results Before and after operation, there were significant differences in the VAS score, nasal resistance, nasal mucociliary transmission rate and olfactory threshold among the three groups (all P < 0.05). After operation, the indicators above in the medium perforation group and the large perforation group were all better than those of before operation, with statistically significant differences (all P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the indicators above in the small perforation group before and after operation (P > 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that the VAS score was positively correlated with nasal resistance and olfactory threshold, and negatively correlated with mucociliary transmission rate(P < 0.05). Conclusion The nasal physiological function is closely related to the size of perforation in patients with NSP. The greater the perforation is, the worse the physiological function is and which can be improved by surgery treatment. However, non-surgical treatment may be consider in small perforation.
