Abstract: Objective To explore the impact of peer support self-management education on the cognitive level, healthy behavior and quality of life of patients with ulcerative colitis. Methods From July 2018 to December 2019, a total of 105 patients with ulcerative colitis admitted to Huai’an First People’s Hospital, Jiangsu Province were selected and divided into intervention group of 54 cases and control group of 51 cases by random number table method. Patients in the control group were given routine nursing and self-management education, and the intervention group was combined with peer support education. Follow-up for six months, disease cognition level, healthy behavior, and quality of life of the two groups were compared. Results During the six-month follow-up, the disease recognition scores of the two groups were higher than before the intervention (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), and the general knowledge, drug knowledge, and complication knowledge scores of intervention group were higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The taking medication, regular diet, proper exercise, and regular review of health behaviors of intervention group were higher than those of control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The quality of life scores of the two groups were higher than those of the same group before the intervention, and the scores of intestinal symptoms, systemic symptoms, emotional problems, and social ability in the intervention group were higher than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Conclusion Peer support and self-management education can help patients with ulcerative colitis improve their disease awareness, promote the development of healthy behaviors, and improve the quality of life of patients.
