Abstract:Objective To explore the application effect of health education based on the theory of empowerment in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods A total of 86 elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis who admitted to the General Hospital of Eastern Theater Command from July 2018 to June 2019 were selected. According to the length of hospital stay, they were divided into treatment group (January to June 2019) with 44 cases and control group (July to December 2018) with 42 cases. The control group was given regular health education, and the treatment group jointly applied health education based on the theory of empowerment. After six months of follow-up, the functional exercise self-efficacy, quality of life were compared. Results The functional exercise self-efficacy of the two groups was longer than before education (P < 0.01), the total time of physical exercise, endurance exercise and functional exercise in the treatment group was longer than that in the control group (P < 0.05); the quality of life scores of the two groups were improved compared with that before education (P < 0.01), the total scores of physical function, symptoms, social contact, work and quality of life were higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Health education guided by the empowerment theory is more easily accepted and recognized by elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis, which helps to promote the development of their functional exercise self-efficacy and improve the quality of life of patients.
