Clinical effect of acupuncture combined with herb fumigation in the treatment of external hemorrhoids

Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical effect of acupuncture combined with herb fumigation in the treatment of external hemorrhoids. Methods The clinical data of 201 patients with external hemorrhoids in the Affiliated Hospital of Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine, from January 2014 to December 2015 were reviewed. They were divided into acupuncture group, Chinese medicine group and acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine group according to therapies, with 67 cases in each group. 2 courses after treatment, the efficacy criteria, focusing on clinical symptoms and VAS score and recurrence after treatment, and comparative evaluation were compared. Results The total effective rate was 73.85% in the acupuncture group and 79.69% in the Chinese medicine group. The total effective rate was 91.15% in the acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine group. Comparison between acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine group and acupuncture group, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05) while there was no significant difference between Chinese medicine group and acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine group (P > 0.05). The VAS scores of the 3rd day, the 7th day and the 14th day were significantly lower than those before the treatment (P < 0.01), and the acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine group was significantly lower than the acupuncture group and the Chinese medicine group (P < 0.05). The patients were followed-up for 6,9,12 months after treatment. The recurrence rate of acupuncture group was lower than that of acupuncture group and Chinese medicine group, while the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture acupoints combined with traditional Chinese medicine is a good method to treat external hemorrhoids, which is effective and simple.
