Investigation on the health status among middle-aged and old males in the rural areas of Nansha District in Guangzhou City

Abstract:Objective To carry out the investigation on the status of middle-aged and old males in rural areas, and provide data support for middle-aged and old males health service model. Methods A cluster sampling method was used to investigate the current situation of middle-aged and old males in 6 villages of Nansha District in Guangzhou from December 2014 to Novembe 2015. 1134 people aged 40-79 years were selected and signing the informed consent, established archives for family health in health questionnaire, physical examination. Results ①The proportions of smoking, drinking and high purine diet in men aged 40-79 years were higher, due to poor health awareness and lack of proper evaluation and cognition of self-health. ②The physical examination showed that the proportions of obesity, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, high cholesterol, hyperuricemia and diabetes mellitus among the middle-aged and old males were higher than other reported, which was 12.88% (according to BMI standards), 40.79%, 22.65%, 73.98%, 43.19%, 11.15% respectively. ③The detection rate of prostate calcification, the incidence of BPH and the positive rate of PSA was 26.31%, 14.20% and 5.06%, respectively. The characteristics increased with age were consistent with those reported at home and abroad, but it also had regional characteristics. Conclusion For serious health hazard of common diseases, chronic diseases, diseases with regional characteristics among middle-aged and old males, through the questionnaire and routine census, can provide evidence-based medical basis for carrying out health education and development of health care-related services among middle-aged and old males
