Methods A total of 93 patients with peripheral facial paralysis admitted to Hangzhou Lower Urban Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital from October 2014 to December 2017 were selected as study objects. They were randomly divided into control group (n = 46) and treatment group (n = 47) according to random number table method. The control group was treated with acupuncture at Renying point, the treatment group was treated with Qufeng Jiedu Huoluo Decoction combined with acupuncture at Renying point. The clinical efficacy of the two groups were compared. The serum level of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured by double sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the House-Brackmann (H-B) score before and after treatment was evaluated, and the adverse reactions during treatment were recorded. Results The total efficacy rate of the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). After treatment, the level of serum MDA in the two groups were significantly lower than those before the treatment, which of the treatment group was lower than that of the control group; the level of serum SOD and NO were significantly higher than those before the treatment, and which of the treatment group were higher than those of the control group, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). After treatment, the H-B score of the two groups were significantly lower than those before treatment, which of the treatment group was lower than that of the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture at Renying point combined with Qufeng Jiedu Huoluo Decoction for patients with peripheral facial paralysis has a good efficacy, it can obviously improve the level of serum MDA, SOD and NO, it is safe and worthy of clinical application.
