Effect of chewing gum on rapid recovery of gastrointestinal function in children with acute appendicitis after operation

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of chewing gum on rapid recovery of gastrointestinal function in children with acute appendicitis after operation. Methods A total of 60 children with appendicitis and 60 their families admitted to the Department of Emergency Surgery, Beijing Children’s Hospital, Capital Medical University from February to August 2023 were selected as the study objects. They were divided into control group and observation group by random number table method, with 30 cases in each group. The control group received routine nursing, and the observation group was supplemented with chewing gum nursing intervention. The first postoperative exhaust time, hospital stay, pain degree, and nursing satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Results The first postoperative exhaust time of the observation group was shorter than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Overall analysis found that there were statistically significant differences in pain scoring time, inter-group, and interaction between the two groups (P<0.05). Further pairwise comparison and intra-group comparison: comparison of pain scores at different time points in the observation group showed statistically significant differences (P<0.05). The pain score of the control group at 6 h after surgery was lower than that before surgery and 2 h after surgery, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Comparison between the two groups: the pain scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group 2,6 h after surgery(P<0.05). The hospitalization time in observation group was shorter than that in control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in nursing satisfaction between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Strengthening the nursing intervention of chewing gum in the nursing care of children after laparoscopic appendectomy can effectively shorten the first postoperative exhaust time and hospital stay of children, and improve the quality of life and nursing satisfaction of patients.
