Abstract:Autophagy is a mechanism of cellular self-protection that plays an important role in cellular homeostasis. Autophagy is closely related to cardiovascular diseases. It affects the occurrence and development of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, cardiomyopathy, coronary atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, heart failure, etc. by regulating the expression of autophagy related genes, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, inflammation, Ca2+ level, and lipid accumulation. Moreover, autophagy can also affect the risk factors of cardiovascular disease by regulating levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and uric acid. This article will review the mechanisms by which autophagy plays a role in cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, providing new directions for the development of cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment drugs and the selection of potential targets.
