Abstract：Objective To explore the application effect of humanistic care based on Watson’s theory of care in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods A total of 107 elderly COPD patients admitted to Xuancheng People’s Hospital of Anhui Province from January 2019 to December 2020 were selected and they were divided into the experimental group with 54 cases and the control group with 53 cases according to the random number table method. The control group was given routine nursing intervention, while the experimental group was given humanistic care based on Watson’s theory of care. After six months of intervention, the self-perceived burden, self-management ability, and quality of life were compared between the two groups. Results After six months of intervention, the scores of physical burden, emotional burden, economic burden, and self-perceived burden in the two groups were lower than those before the intervention, while those of the experimental group were lower than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P ＜ 0.05). After six months of intervention, the total scores of symptom management, daily life management, emotion management, self-efficacy management, and self-management ability in the two groups were higher than those before intervention, while those of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P ＜ 0.05). After six months of intervention, the scores of respiratory symptoms, activity limitation, disease impact on life, and quality of life between the two groups were lower than those before intervention, while those of the experimental group were lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P ＜ 0.05). Conclusion Humanistic care based on Watson’s theory of care can help relieve the self-perceived burden of elderly COPD patients, enhance self-management ability, and improve the quality of life.
