Relationship between adiponectin and diabetes mellitus and its complications

Abstract:Adiponectin is a cytokine secreted by dipocytes. It binds to receptors and has functions to improve sugar and lipid metabolism, increase insulin sensitivity, and protect vascular endothelial cells. It has anti-inflammatory and anti atherogenic effects in cardiovascular system. Adiponectin is associated with insulin resistance, obesity, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and can reduce the risk of developing hypertension. Adiponectin is expressed differently in groups of different races, ages, and genders. Adiponectin has a cardiovascular protective effect and can predict the severity of diabetic large blood vessels. This article reviews adiponectin receptors, signal transduction, and the association between adiponectin and vascular risk factors, diabetic macrovascular and microvascular lesions.
