Abstract:Objective To understand the current situation of patent application and patent knowledge of medical staff in the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University (hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”), to provide reference for the formulation and adjustment of patent management policies in our hospital in the future. Methods In May 2020, the convenience sampling method was adopted, and a questionnaire was designed on the basis of reading and references to investigate and analyze the current situation of patent application and the mastery of relevant patent knowledge of medical staff in our hospital. Results A total of 410 questionnaires were distributed in this study, and 408 valid questionnaires were recovered, with an effective recovery rate of 99.5%. In this survey, only 125 medical staff had applied for patents, accounted for 30.6%. The main reason for not applying was that there were no projects to apply for patents. Among them, 105 patents had been authorized, mainly utility model patents, 81 patents were in maintenance, four patents had lost the protection of the patent rights and terminated, and only one patent had been transferred. Only 69 people (16.9%) had some understanding of the basic knowledge of patents and application procedures, and 339 people (83.1%) had no basic knowledge. There were statistically significant differences in the proportion of medical staff in different professional and technical fields and professional titles (P < 0.05). Comparing the proportions of medical staff with different professional and technical fields, educational backgrounds, professional titles, and whether they had applied for patents before on the basic knowledge of patents and the degree of understanding of the application procedures, and the differences were highly statistically significant (P < 0.01). The multivariate logistic regression results showed that senior professional titles (OR[95%CI]: 5.19[2.36-11.42]), medical staff who knew the protection period of patent application (OR[95%CI]: 9.92[4.75-20.70]), utility model and design patent right answered correctly (OR[95%CI]: 2.36[1.33-4.20]) were the influencing factors of patent application (P < 0.05). Conclusion The patent application rate of medical staff in our hospital is low, and the patent knowledge is insufficient. Hospitals should attach importance to patent management, explore and cultivate high-value patents, strengthen the training and popularization of patent knowledge, improve the incentive mechanism, mobilize the enthusiasm for patent creation and application, and use the concept of total quality management to improve the quality and conversion rate of patent applications.
