Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) on patients with open and closed AO/OTA-C type distal humeral fractures. Methods A total of 90 patients with AO/OTA-C type distal humeral fractures who underwent ORIF in Zhuzhou Central Hospital, Hunan Province from January 2017 to June 2020 were enrolled and divided into open fracture group (40 cases) and closed fracture group (50 cases) according to fracture type. Postoperative follow-up was at least 12 months. Operation time, intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stay, fracture healing time, upper limb function evaluation indexes, postoperative complications and reoperation were compared between the two groups. Results There were no significant differences in operation time, intraoperative blood loss and length of hospital stay between the two groups (P > 0.05); the fracture healing time of open fracture group was significantly longer than that of closed fracture group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Both groups were followed up for 12-55 months, with median follow-up time of 35.60 months. There were no significant differences in flexion and extension activity, rotation activity, Mayo elbow performance score, disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand score, excellent and good rate, incidence of postoperative complications, and reoperation rate between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion There is no significant difference in upper limb function and prognosis between open and closed AO/OTA-C type distal humeral fractures after ORIF, but open fracture healing is delayed.
