Abstract:Objective To investigate the status quo of alexithymia and fatigue in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) carriers and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, and to understand the relationship between alexithymia and fatigue. Methods From September 2019 to June 2020, a total of 200 HIV/AIDS patients who were selected from a hospital in Chengdu by convenient sampling were surveyed using the alexithymia scale and the Chinese version of the multidimensional fatigue scale. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between alexithymia and fatigue. Results A total of 186 questionnaires were returned, and the effective response rate was 93%. The scores of HIV/AIDS patients on alexithymia range were 20 to 82 points, with an average of (56.62±10.52) points; the total fatigue score were 20 to 92 points, with an average of (53.18±12.51) points. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the total score of patients with alexithymia and the difficulty in identifying their own emotional dimension, the difficulty in describing their own emotional dimension, and the dimension of extroverted thinking were positively correlated with the total fatigue score and each dimension scoring (r > 0, P < 0.01). Conclusion HIV/AIDS patients have a certain degree of alexithymia and fatigue, and the two are related. It is recommended that clinical medical staff pay attention to the patient’s alexithymia and fatigue in their work and take targeted measures.
