Abstract:Objective To compare the therapeutic effects of astragalus polysaccharide and Simvastatin in rats with hyperlipidemia. Methods The model of rats with hyperlipidemia was induced by high fat diet. The SD rats were randomly divided into normal group, disease model group, Simvastatin group and astragalus polysaccharide group by completely random method. The normal group was fed with basal feed, the other three groups were fed with high fat diet, among which, the astragalus polysaccharide group was given astragalus polysaccharide 700 mg/kg by gavage, Simvastatin group was given Simvastatin 6.7 mg/kg by gavage, normal group and disease model group were given normal saline by gavage. The amount of water intake, food intake, energy intake, excretion and body weight of the rats were recorded. The serum samples were collected every 4 weeks. The changes of the contents of blood glucose, triacylglycerol (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and the activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were detected. Results After high fat diet for 8 weeks, the amount of energy intake, body weight and the levels of serum lipid, transaminase in disease model group were all significantly higher than those of normal group (P < 0.05), while the amount of food intake, water intake, excretion were significantly lower than those of normal group (P < 0.05). After drug intervention for 4 weeks, the contents of TC, TG and LDL-C in Simvastatin group were significantly lower than those of disease model group (P < 0.05), while there were no statistically significant differences of the contents of TC, TG and LDL-C between astragalus polysaccharide group and disease model group (P > 0.05). After drug intervention for 8 weeks, the amount of water intake, excretion, body weight and the levels of blood lipid in astragalus polysaccharide group and Simvastatin group were significantly improved compared with those of disease model group (P < 0.05). In addition, the levels of blood glucose and transaminase in astragalus polysaccharide group were also significantly improved compared with those of disease model group (P < 0.05), while the indexes above in the Simvastatin group were not significantly improved. Conclusion The effects of lipid-lowering of astragalus polysaccharide is slow, but it can achieve the same effects of lipid-lowering as Simvastatin through prolonging drug administration, and the improvement for blood glucose and transaminase is better than Simvastatin.
