Effects of cataract surgery with torsional ultrasound mode and small incision extracapsular cataract extraction in Lifeline Express

Abstract:Objective To evaluate effects of cataract surgery with torsional ultrasound mode and small incision extracapsular cataract extraction at Liaoyuan station in Lifeline Express. Methods From May to August 2016, 1209 cases (1209 eyes) of cataract surgeries at Liaoyuan station in Lifeline Express were retrospectively evaluated. Phacoemulsification with torsional ultrasound mode were performed in 1122 cases and extracapsular cataract extraction through a small incision in 87 cases. The preoperative and postoperative data of treated eyes, operative procedures and surgical complications were recorded. Results There was a significant difference between the uncorrected visual acuity of the first post-operative day with the best corrected visual acuity before operation (P < 0.01). The main intraoperative complication included: hyphema in 14 eyes (1.16%), posterior capsule rupture in 17 eyes (1.41%), suspensory ligament rupture in 6 eyes (0.50%), vitreous fluxion in 16 eyes (1.32%) and Descemet′s membrane detachment in 20 eyes (1.65%).The early period postoperative complications included: cornea edema in 181cases (15.0%), intraocular hypertension in 35 cases (2.90%), exudation in anterior chamber in 3 cases (0.25%), leakage of the wound in 2 cases (0.17%) and pupil capture of intraocular lens in 5 eyes(0.41%). Conclusion Both phacoemulsification with torsional ultrasound mode and extracapsular cataract extraction through a small incision are safe and effective in large-scale cataract surgery in Lifeline Express and may provide improvement of visual acuity in cataract patients.
