Ultrasonography imaging characteristics analysis of the phyllodes tumor of the breast

Abstract:Objective To analyze the sonographic features of phyllodes tumors of the breast (PTB) and explore the diagnostic value of ultrasonography in the PTB. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on the patients with PTBs in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University from June 2015 to June 2017, including 36 masses with complete ultrasound and pathological data. Results Among the 36 PTBs, 19 PTBs were benign, 11 PTBs were borderline and 6 were malignant tumors according to the pathologic diagnosis. The ultrasonic image feature of the masses were commonly observed to have more a clear-cut boundary, and inhomogeneous internal echo, the rarely calcification and more blood flows. The clear boundary was more commonly detected in the benign phyllodes tumors (χ2=6.597, P = 0.037). The inhomogeneous internal echo was more commonly observed in the malignant, with high echo separation and a cystic echo-free area was more commonly observed in these malignant tumor (χ2=6.840, P = 0.033; χ2=7.049, P = 0.029). Conclusion The ultrasonic imaging of PTB exhibits definite characteristics, and the border with high echo separation and cystic areas in the tumors can be used to differentiate between benign and malignant PTBs.
