Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of salivary cortisol (Cor) and secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) levels on cognitive function in elderly patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Methods A total of 103 elderly patients with BMS admitted to Jinhua Municipal Central Hospital, Zhejiang Province (hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”) from February 2019 to April 2021 were selected as the study group, and 54 healthy elderly people in our hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. The levels of salivary Cor, SIgA, and cognitive function of the two groups were determined. The study group was divided into cognitive impairment group (26 cases) and normal cognitive function group (77 cases) according to the existence of cognitive impairment. The clinical data of the two groups were compared to analyze the influencing factors of cognitive impairment in BMS patients and the predictive value of related indicators. Results Salivary Cor level in the study group was higher than that in the control group, salivary SIgA level, mini mental status examination, and Montreal cognitive assessment scale scores were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The scores of Hamilton depression (HAMD) scale, the levels of Th2 cells in peripheral blood, and salivary Cor in cognitive impairment group were higher than those in normal cognitive function group, while the levels of Th1 cells in peripheral blood and salivary SIgA were lower than those in normal cognitive function group (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that HAMD score and salivary Cor, SIgA levels were independent influencing factors of cognitive impairment in BMS patients (P < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of Cor and SIgA combined diagnosis of cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients with BMS was higher than those of Cor and SIgA alone (P < 0.05). Conclusion The levels of salivary Cor and SlgA of BMS patients are related to neurological function. The combination of the two has certain efficacy in predicting cognitive function of BMS patients, which is worthy of further clinical research.
