Study on the effect of video-assisted teaching on improving the clinical competence of ICU undergraduate nursing students

Abstract:Objective To explore the application effect of video-assisted teaching in ICU undergraduate nursing students’ clinical competence. Methods A total of 58 nursing undergraduates who worked as ICU interns in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine (hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”) from May 2018 to June 2019 were selected as the control group. Fifty-four nursing undergraduates who practiced in the same department of our hospital from July 2019 to June 2020 were selected as the observation group. Problem-based learning (PBL) and case-based learning (CBL) methods were used in the control group, the observation group incorporated video learning on this basis. After four weeks of practice, nursing students’ clinical competence, theoretical knowledge, operational skills, students’ satisfaction with teaching, teachers’ satisfaction with students of the two groups were compared. Results The total scores of clinical competence, theoretical knowledge, operational skills, students’ satisfaction with teaching and teachers’ satisfaction with students in the observation group were all higher than those in the control group, with statistical significance (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Video-assisted teaching is helpful to improve ICU nursing students’ clinical competence, theoretical and technical performance, and teachers and students are more satisfied with each other. It is worthy of popularization and application in clinical nursing teaching.
