Abstract:The theory of healthy qi and pathogenic factors shares similar understanding about the physiological and pathological function of immune system with modern medicine. The “healthy qi” is able to resist external pathogens and maintain normal functional activities, which can be reflected in the defense and monitoring function of the immune system. The “pathogenic factors” can be reflected in pathogen and immune imbalance. Each “pathogenic factor” causes different pathogenesis, which can be reflected in the change of different biomarkers. Dampness, wind, phlegm and blood stasis are the key to the pathogenesis of rheumatic immune diseases. Dampness evil is related to the increasing degree of inflammation, while wind pathogen has a close relationship with higher tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, interleukin-1β level. Phlegm and blood stasis suggest longer course and higher activity of disease. To deeply explore the relationship between healthy qi and pathogenic factors theory in traditional Chinese medicine and immune homeostasis can not only explain the connotation and extension of the core theory of traditional Chinese medicine in scientific language, but also enlighten the scientific research and clinical treatment of immune related diseases.
