Abstract:Objective To study the location of the mental foramen and the course of mental canal by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods From January 2014 to May 2015, 50 healthy subjects from Department of Stomatology, The Third People′ Hospital of Zhenjiang City were collected. They were detected by CBCT, and the angle between the mental canal and the vertical curve, the location of the mental foramen, the distance from the superior border of the mental foramen to alveolar crest and the distance from the inferior border of the mental foramen to the inferior border of mandible were measured. Results There were 27 cases of mental foramen located at the bottom of the second bicuspid tooth root, accounted for 54.00%. The mean angle between the mental canal and the vertical curve was (46.0±2.3)°. The mean distance from the superior border of the mental foramen to alveolar crest was (16.88±1.44) mm, the mean distance from the inferior border of the mental foramen to the inferior border of mandible was (8.95±1.98) mm. The distance from the superior border of the mental foramen to alveolar crest was greater than the distance from the inferior border of the mental foramen to the inferior border of mandible (P < 0.05). Conclusion CBCT can accurately measure the position change of the mental formen. The mental foramen is mainly located in the root of the mandibular second premolar. The inferior alveolar nerve mostly comes from the mandibular second premolar forward, upward and outward through the mental foramen.
