Abstract:Objective To investigate the medical students′ cognitive status and job intention about elderly health, in order to provide some suggestions about elderly health education for medical college. Methods From March to June in 2016, 963 medical students in Sichuan Province were investigated and interviewed by self-made questionnaires, and the obtained data were analyzed. Results About 56.6% students lacked the knowledge of elderly health. 66.4% medical colleges didn′t give lectures on the elderly health, and only 17.6% medical students showed that they would be willing to work in the filed of elderly health. The analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in gender, grade and specialty about the understanding of the elderly diseases (P < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences between the sexes in the cognitive status of elderly mental and elderly nursing (P < 0.05). Conclusion There are differences in gender, grade and specialty about the cognition of the elderly health. Medical studentsare generally less aware of the elderly health, and they are not willing to work in the field of geriatric health. The school should increase the input and guidance of education for geriatric health, so as to enhance the initiative of medical students in choosing careers.
