The relationship between hospital administrative personnels′ job burnout, professional identity and job satisfaction

Abstract:Objective To understand the job burnout of the administrative personnels of the hospital, and explore the impact of job burnout on professional identity and job satisfaction among administrative personnels. Methods 150 administrative personnels in 6 tertiary public hospitals of Zigong City in Sichuan Province were selected by the Maslach burnout inventory-general survey, career identity scale and job satisfaction scale from February to May 2017. The correlations of job burnout and professional identity, job satisfaction were analyzed with Pearson correlation. The causal relationship of job burnout and professional identity, job satisfaction was analyzed with hierarchical linear regression model. Results The average score of the administrative personnels job burnout was (2.44±0.93) points, emotional exhaustion was (1.97±1.38) points, depersonalization was (1.32±1.36) points, low professional efficacy was (1.81±1.44) points. The job burnout was significant negatively correlated professional identity (r=-0.485, P < 0.01); the job burnout was also significant negatively correlated job satisfaction (r=-0.506, P < 0.01). The professional identity and job satisfaction of administrative personnels was significantly reduced by depersonalization (β =-0.298, P < 0.01) (β =-0.273, P < 0.05) and low professional efficacy (β =-0.382, P < 0.001) (β =-0.155, P < 0.05); the job satisfaction was better predicted by emotional exhaustion (β =-0.218, P < 0.05). Conclusion The phenomenon of job burnout in hospital administrators is widespread, job burnout can significantly reduce the professional identity and job satisfaction of administrative personnels.
