Abstract:Objective To confirm the elements of the academic English teaching syllabus for PhD students with the background of traditional Chinese medicine based on students need. Methods A total of 74 PhD students by general recruitments and in-service PhD students in 2014 in the Graduate School of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences were surveyed. The questionnaire was designed under the guideline of the theories of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and English for academic purposes (EAP). Statistical analysis was conducted using factor analysis and principal component analysis. Results A total of 53 PhD students completed the survey. Six basic elements of the English teaching syllabus for Chinese PhD students, including “learning principles” “writing principles” “expression principle” “learning attitude principles” “testing principles” and “teaching test principles”. Conclusion When setting up an English teaching course outline for PhD students of Chinese medicine, we should make full use of the “learning principles” and pay attention to writing as the center of gravity and translation to facilitate writing. Apply the problem-oriented learning and teaching model to solve the problems of the “testing principle” elements. In addition, the outline setting should reflect Chinese medicine characteristics.
