Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of late or chest wall recurrence of breast cancer. Methods Electronic databases including the PubMed, Web of Science, EMbase, VIP, China national knowledge internet, Chinese biomedical literature database and Wanfang database system were searched, search term from building to March 22, 2017. The inclusion criteria was efficacy and safety studies of controlled clinical studies in which hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy was compared with chemotherapy alone for patients with late or chest wall recurrence of breast cancer. Cochrane handbook 5.1.0 was applied in evaluating the quality of included trials and RevMan 5.1.0 software was used for data analysis. Results Eight studies including 519 cases of late or chest wall recurrence of breast cancer were included. The results of the Meta-analysis exhibited that compared with chemotherapy alone, hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy could increase effective rate (OR=2.15, 95%CI: 1.50-3.09, P < 0.01) and disease control rate (OR = 2.26, 95%CI: 1.42-3.60, P=0.0006). But there were no significant differences in rate of leucopenia (OR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.43-1.32, P=0.32), rate of neutropenia (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 0.58-2.18, P=0.73), rate of gastrointestinal reaction (OR = 1.00, 95%CI: 0.59-1.70, P=1.00), rate of liver and kidney dysfunction (OR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.55-1.74, P=0.93). Conclusion Compared with chemotherapy alone, hyperthermia combined with chemotherapymay be more effective for late or chest wall recurrence of breast cancer, whereas adverse reactions are similar. For the quality restriction and possible publication bias of the included studies, more high quality randomized controlled trials are required to further verify this conclusion.
