Abstract:The theory of yin and yang is the cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine theory. Traditional Chinese medicine hold the view that the physiological function of the human body lies in the dynamic balance between yin and yang. The occurrence of diseases is the result of imbalance between yin and yang. Mitochondrion is the center of energy metabolism in the cell, and controlled by a balance between fusion and fission. There is a relationship of opposition, restriction, mutual use and balance between the negative and the positive, which complements the theory of yin and yang. The fusion and fission not only play an important role in maintaining the structure and function of mitochondria, but also closely related to cardiovascular, central nervous, digestive system and cancer diseases. This paper attempts to discuss the effect and mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine on mitochondrial fusion and division in the related diseases from the perspective of adjusting the “yin and yang balance”.
