Abstract:Insomnia is one of the common diseases that perplex the elderly. The primary insomnia can be attributed to the category of mental diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the theory of “spirit governed by heart and brain” which has become a consensus in the field of traditional Chinese medicine, Professor Xie Ning combs the pathogenesis of insomnia in traditional Chinese medicine according to the physical characteristics of the elderly. It is suggested that we should start from two key points of treatment, namely, mental and medullary dystrophy, and take into account the changes of pathogenesis, such as disharmony between camp and health, phlegm and blood stasis disturbing the spirit. Based on the traditional Chinese medicine prescription Dihuang Yinzi, we should establish the targeted treatment ideas of tonifying, nourishing, regulating and clearing to treat senile insomnia.
