Influences of cognitive intervention on quality of life, neurotransmitter, sphincter function in anxiety disorder patients with functional constipation

Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of cognitive intervention on quality of life, neurotransmitter, sphincter function in anxiety disorder patients with functional constipation. Methods Ninety cases of anxiety disorder patients with functional constipation in the seventh People′s Hospital of Hangzhou during July 2013 to July 2016 were selected as research subjects and divided into control group(routine nursing intervention) and observation group (cognitive intervention) according to single blind randomized controlled method, with 45 cases in each group. Before and after intervention, quality of life in two groups was evaluated by patient assessment of constipation quality of life scale (PAC-QOL), serum contents of intestinal neurotransmitters were measured by radioimmunoassay, sphincter function indices were measured by total gastrointestinal motility instrument. Results Before intervention, there were no significant differences in the quality of life, neurotransmitter and sphincter function between the two groups (P > 0.05). After intervention, scores of physical discomfort, psychosocial discomfort, anxiety and worry, satisfaction in observation group were lower than those of control group; serum contents of intestinal neurotransmitters such as nitric oxide, somatostatin were lower than those of control group, the content of peptide neurotransmitter-substance, 5-hydroxytryptamine was higher than those of control group; muscle function indices such as lower esophageal sphincter pressure was higher than that of control group, anorectal resting pressure, anal maximal squeeze pressure were lower than those of control group (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Cognitive intervention can improve the quality of life in anxiety disorder patients with functional constipation, balance the secretion of enteric neurotransmitters and sphincter function.
