Abstract:Objective To investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Caulopyhllum robustum water extract. Methods The mice were randomly by weight divided into model group (CMC-Na), positive control group, Caulopyhllum robustum water extract low-dose, medium-dose and high-dose groups (3, 9, 27 g/kg, calculated by crude drug), each group had 10 mice. They were given relevant medicine intragastrically, once a day, for consecutive 7 d. The xylene-induced ear edema method was used to determine the degree of ear edema. Paper-induced granuloma model was used to determine the inhibition ratio of granulation tissue hyperplasia, the anti-inflammatory activity of Caulopyhllum robustum water extract was investigated. The pain incubation period and the number of writhing within 15 minutes were determined by acetic acid writhing method. Pain thresholds of mice were determined by hot-plate test before and after medication 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes, the analgesic effect of Caulopyhllum robustum water extract was investigated. Results Compared with model group, Caulopyhllum robustum water extract medium-dose and high-dose groups could restrain the degree of ear edema of mice (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01); the high-dose group could decrease the dry weight of granulation tissue (P < 0.05). Caulopyhllum robustum water extract medium-dose and high-dose groups could prolong the pain incubation period, decrease the number of writhing in mice within 15 minutes (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), and extended pain thresholds of mice 30, 60 minutes after medication (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), the high-dose group could also extend pain thresholds of mice 90, 120 minutes after medication (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Conclusion Caulopyhllum robustum water extract possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
