Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationships in plasma uric acid levels between patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD). Methods Thirty-nine patients with idiopathic RBD (iRBD group), 43 patients with PD (PD group) and 128 healthy controls (healthy control group) were collected from Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University from March 2016 to March 2017. All patients with iRBD were confirmed by clinical assessment and polysomnography. Subjects' plasma uric acid levels were measured. Two-way analysis of variance was used to examine abnormalities in uric acid levels in patients with iRBD and PD. Results The levels of serum uric acid in the iRBD group [(346.5±38.3) mmol/L] were significantly higher than that of the PD group [(236.5±49.8) mmol/L] and the healthy control group [(331.0±39.8) mmol/L], the differences were all statistically significant (P < 0.01). But there was no significant difference between the PD group and the healthy control group (P > 0.05). Conclusion Uric acid levels in PD patients are lower than those in healthy subjects and RBD patients, suggesting that low uric acid level may be a biological marker of PD.
