Investigation and analysis of physicians and pharmacists′ awareness and attitudes towards the implementation of the national essential medicine system in the secondary and tertiary hospitals in Nanjing City

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the awareness and attitudes of physicians and pharmacists on the national essential drug system from secondary and tertiary hospitals in Nanjing, in order to provide policy suggestions for priority use of basic medications in the secondary and tertiary hospitals. Methods A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate doctors and pharmacists from 15 hospitals in Nanjing City by representative sampling. Results About the selection of antibiotics and traditional Chinese medicines in essential drugs, pharmacists′ correct rates were respectively higher by 1.5 percent and 21.1 percent than physicians. The physicians′ and pharmacists′ average scores of familiarity for basic drug system were (15.73±3.62) points and (16.15±4.31) points (t=1.110, P=0.268). The physicians′ and pharmacists′ average scores of recognition were (17.31±3.35) points and (18.29±3.94) points (t=2.848, P=0.005). The proportions of physicians and pharmacists through professional training to understand the basic drug system were respectively 28.3% and 54.1% (χ2=31.497, P=0.000). Conclusion The pharmacists′ and physicians′ familiarity and recognition of the basic drug system are in the middle level, and pharmacists are higher than physician in recognition. There are differences in the understanding of the accessibility of essential drugs between physicians and pharmacists. The majority of physicians have not participated in related knowledge training or learning, and more than half of the pharmacist understand the basic drug system through professional training.
